Carlos Silva thinks he has a spot hands-down but is willing to fight for it. Randy Wells is blaming everyone but himself for an average and disappointing season. The young arms that made the second half surge from a strong bullpen are getting a shot at starting. I think the top three should be solid. Big Z is always a big Q but he seems to have finally turned the curve on being a pitcher and not just a thrower.

I think Silva gets a spot and would prefer Looper or Wellemeyer actually get the 5th, assuming either of them can still throw a ball. Cashner and Samardzija are better off in the bullpen. Same for Russell. If the year goes better than expected, you look for another arm. If it doesn't you give the young guys a shot and say sayonara to the veterans.

I have to say the Marmol deal, bringing back Kerry Wood and the Matt Garza deal give me a small sense of hope. I know where that will lead but all three are good, underrated moves to improve a pitching staff. The biggest problem for the Cubs is how much better the Brewers got this offseason.

Ronnie Brewer signs with the Bulls

The Magic matching the offer to JJ Redick was a huge blessing in disguise to the Bulls. They already had their three point sharpshooter in Kyle Korver. That left a bigger need for a long, athletic defender. Ronnie Brewer was quickly scooped up as a backup.

The thing is, I don't see him as plan B but rather what should have been one of their top targets all along. He is a great fit to this team and will thrive with Thibodeau's defensive schemes and teachings. He is one of the best perimeter defenders in the league and will force a lot of fast breaks. Something the Bulls are very good at but need to do more of.

Brewer has an awkward shot from a childhood injury. It is very unorthodox but still a lot of his game is above the rim. He is an excellent finisher and loves to throw it down. That will really warm up the United Center and get fans on his side quickly. His 52.1 career field goal percentage should tell you how much of his game is around the rim. He will help Rose get more assists, rather than Hinrich/Salmons throwing up a brick.

Deron Williams was pretty upset when Brewer was traded last year to the Grizzlies. It says a lot when one of, arguably the best, point guards in the NBA talks about wanting to leave the team after you are traded. Williams talked about his three year deal and leaving his options because of this trade. That really has to scare the Jazz after losing Boozer, Korver, Matthews and now Brewer. I love Jerry Sloan but they could be in a real bind here soon. They surrendered two, first-round picks for Jefferson. He better work out.

The Bulls are assimilating a lot of the right pieces. Basketball is, after all, a team sport. Their games should play well together. It certainly helps that three of the new guys all played together in the past and will help them all adjust to the new scenery. The Bulls have room for another add and rumor is Matt Barnes while possibly re-signing Brad Miller. That would leave them with one of the deepest 8-9 man rotations on the NBA. A deep team worked for the Blackhawks didn't it?

Chicago White Sox Outlook for Second Half

I am not writing this post as a Cubs fan just hating on the White Sox. I simply do not think the White Sox best baseball is ahead of them. Their roster looks mostly like an average team, which is how they were performing until a nice run heading into the All-Star break.

The problem with that is it created false hope and has many South siders believing their team is better than it really is. They hit an easy stretch that included the Pirates, Nationals, Cubs, Royals twice, and a four game series with the Angels. Not to completely discredit their run, as they torched through that 25 game set, which also included the Rangers and Braves. They play the games for a reason. A team like the Cubs would probably still have cruised through at a less than .500 clip, so they accomplished something. Note: the Cubs stink. They are really pushing me to my limits.

It is likely Kenny Williams will look into his magic hat and find some move. I just don't see the current roster as a playoff-bound team. Four of the five starting pitchers have ERA's over 4 and one of those [Peavy] is, of course, gone for the season. At a minimum, they have to replace him. Probably Freddy Garcia, too. If they do that, you will see a different stance from me.

They have had offensive woes leaving some reason to believe a few of those players could turn things around. Carlos Quentin got a hot power stroke going into the break. Do you really think Konerko can keep up his pace, though? How about Rios? I would probably say Rios is more likely as I have always thought he was a decent player. Konerko has been a terrific first baseman over his career but he hasn't hit .300 or had 100 RBI's since 2006. Something's gotta give. I guess his back.

Detroit has there problems and Minnesota seems to be missing some pieces, too. You can't ever count a Gardenhire team out, though. Pending upcoming moves, I predict both teams finish the season ahead of the White Sox.

Past statements from Lebron prove interesting

OK, one last post here on the Lebron margin-right: 1em;">

In an article from Jan 5, 2006 by Chris Broussard, the Queen had some very interesting quotes.

"I don't try to pattern my game after anybody's, but if I had to talk about similarities, I'd look at Penny Hardaway when he was in Orlando. He was a 6'7" point guard. He had flair, he could pass, he'd dunk on you and he could shoot jumpers. Then I'd look at Oscar Robertson and Magic and the way they were able to dominate games. I don't say I'm going to try to be those guys, but I can see a little bit of my game in each of them. And I'm not really concerned about surpassing them in history. I just hope that one day people will think I was one of the best players to ever play in this league. Ever."

Many knew he wanted to play more of a point role and distribute the ball. He clearly states that above. His first reference was really Penny Hardaway, so why did the media appoint him as the next Jordan? He never wanted it. It would have changed a lot had he come out and said so. He says "one" of the best ever. Go back and watch interviews, tapes, or especially Jordan's Hall of Fame speech and tell me he was OK being regarded as just "one" of the best. No way. He wanted to be THE best NBA player of all time. At all costs. Just ask his wife and kids or go back again and watch the Jordan HOF speech.

"I know that'll take titles, though. When I think about the best players in the league, I think of the guys who've won championships, guys like Tim Duncan, Kobe and Shaq. Of all of them, I like Kobe....I don't think I have an instinct like Kobe, where I just want to kill everybody. But I do want to be the best player on the court every time I step out there."

There is still no mention of Jordan. He even admits not having the killer instinct of Kobe. That is pretty clear after the Boston series and then, of course, the stampede to Miami. He still wants to be the best player on the court, which he is night in and out. What he doesn't have or want to be is the bona fide leader. Now comes the most interesting quote of all.

"I don't want to go ringchasing, as I call it; you know, going to a team that's already pretty established and trying to win a ring with them. I want to stay with the Cavs and build a champion. And I feel like we're on our way."

That is certainly quite the opposite of the reasoning behind, "in this fall I am taking my talents to South Beach", which said it was all about the chance for a championship. If that's not ringchasing, I don't know what is. I still don't blame him for leaving and completely understand going somewhere else. It just becomes interesting to look back at past quotes and reflect. Thanks for the media and digital archiving.

Here is the entire Down the Road article. Maybe we should have known Broussard had some real insight on the topic.

Shady, Aftermath

Yes, that's a reference to Eminem. Thank you, you sons of bitches, for captivating everyone's attention the last few weeks/months for a pre-determined, fake going through the motion of evaluations, free agency process. This was clearly a decision you made up a long time ago. You could see it on the $hit-eating grin Queen James (that's what his new nickname better be as second fiddle to Wade) when he was asked the question.

First feedback, is that this is not a good thing for the NBA. I hope most fans don't forget this and hold true. I don't care if they top the 72 win season (which they won't), it's all fabricated. We were basically watching a WWF ( I don't care what the name is now that's what it will always be referred to by me) match. A few close people decided the outcome and everyone else was left watching the fake blood and chair smashings.

Mark my word, the owners will react to this. There will be a new team rule, a la the Larry Bird rights rule, where no team can go below a certain threshold. There will be exceptions for bankruptcy, but they will make a change so the league is never taken hostage like this again. It will be the Miami triumvirate or trifecta rule. I am going to check trademarks to purchase the rights now. Maybe I can spoil in the riches, too. If only I were in Miami and didn't have to pay the taxes.

Let's face it this was all about two things; money and fame. They could all save tax money there. They could also stroll the beaches with their white suits and stroll the beaches (yeah this is him on draft day, so we all should have known this day was coming).

As for play on the court, I am sure they will figure out and win the championship they seek. I hope Wade gets hurt from having to play 45 minutes a game and it never happens, but that seems pretty unlikely for five years straight. Stranger things have happened.

One last question is, say they win the next five championships (and pretty much any less than 3 is a failure in my opinion), who will be regarded as the best player from those teams? Does Wade rank higher than Lebron on all-time lists because this is his team Lebron had to follow and join and Wade always has the extra championship? Something to think about for his royal highness and all his posse.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; He tried so hard to make this the relevant story for months, it became completely irrelevant. "The Decision" is more like "It's Finally F'ing Over". This hijacking is worse than Brett Favre. I love Kevin Durant. He quietly re-signed and put out a simple tweet. He is now my favorite player not named Derrick Rose.

Interestingly, Baby Bron (screw the king nickname, an immature, baby is what he is) could have used his very own name for a better way to handle this. The classic song by Led Zeppelin, Bron-Y-Aur-Stomp, carries one of the greatest, rhythmic beats ever produced. It was written while the band took some time to recover from a concert tour in a small, cottage. They utilized the change of scenery to re-vitialize and seek creativity, which ended in a masterpiece. Mr. James had exactly the same chance this off-season. A quiet getaway to look deep into his own self (if that even exists) would have given him the answer he sought.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; What exactly is the Lebron brand, anyway? Whatever it is you can rest assured, I am avoiding it and encourage you to do the same. Take a page from Kobe, who quietly signed his extension and won his 5th championship. That's what great players do. They win championships.

You may ultimately win wherever you end up. I really hope you stay in Cleveland. That would create an exciting competition in the Eastern conference with Miami, Orlando, Cleveland, Boston, and Chicago. If Magic and Larry had teamed up, would they live the same as legends today? Personally, I don't think so. People love rivalries, not hand-made championships. Miami is the cop out and people won't be as interested. Take the most challenging path and finish what you started. It will be the most rewarding, personally and to your global icon dreams (as well as the much-needed championship for Cleveland fans).

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Which player would you rather have going forward? Which contract would you rather have, too?

Player A: 17.6 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 2.0 APG, 46.6%FG, 0.9 SPG, 0.9 BPG, 38.6 3P%, 25 years old (403 career games)

Player B: 18.3 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 3.1 APG, 47.2%FG, 1.2 SPG, 0.4 BPG, 41.4 3P%, 31 years old (884 career games)

Player A: 4 years for $51 million.
Player B: 4 years for $61 million (reportedly).

OK, this comparison is not about their careers but more looking at their futures.

Player A is Luol Deng.

I am not saying the Celtics are making a horrible deal here. They have to re-sign their heart and soul, franchise player. It is also great to see Pierce should end his career with one team, assuming he isn't traded towards the end of this impending deal. Pierce has had a much better career than Deng as a perennial All-Star, NBA Champion &MVP and will end up as a Hall of Famer.

However, what I don't get is why everyone is always down on Luol Deng. Why is his contract considered one of the worst in basketball? I think it is fairly reasonable looking at his numbers and comparing them with contracts being signed today. He is not going to be a superstar and is slightly overpaid but it certainly doesn't seem to qualify in the untradeable category. If you showed those stats to someone, especially including his age, and asked what he was worth, what number would come back? Especially, given what bench players like Amir Johnson and Darko are getting.

Thursday's Thoughts

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Majority stay right where they are and soak in the riches.

Tony La Russa - one of the greatest baseball managers of all time. I can respect your honesty to state your feelings on the Arizona issue, but what were you thinking? I'm not touching how I disagree with your stance but rather questioning if you discussed this with any of your Latino players. Albert Pujols, anyone?

Are we seeing, or have we seen, the reign of Federer come to an end? Looks like it.

How sad is the story about Randall Cunningham's son? My thoughts and prayers to you and your family.

Hey, Vincent Jackson, you might want to consider changing your stance on not reporting to camp. Two DUI's leading to a 3 game suspension. I think your public image could use a boost.

Some things never change...Benson and Vick.

Pretty obvious Phil was coming back when Byron took the Cleveland job. Did anyone mention that was his backup option and the Lakers were Plan A?

Interesting to see how full circle the salary cap is coming on the Hawks. It allowed you to sign some of the players who helped you win the Cup. Now, you are on the other painful side of staying on top and having to shed key players. Steeger was one of my favorites and will be missed. I just read about Ladd and am now really sick of the unraveling.

First free agent contracts...Darko for $20 million and Drew Gooden for $32 million. Really? You couldn't find a better way to invest that money. I am a GM for hire and have a few ideas.

Doesn't it make you laugh all these billionaire owners having to sit down and run a sales pitch to a bunch of twenty-somethings? Who writes the checks? They have to go home at night and laugh. Honey, how was your day? Well, two of the most successful business men in the world came in and told me how they could turn me into a global icon and a rich man like them. One of them had never even heard of Akron but he was about as tall as me. Have you ever heard of this thing called Power Point? However, I told them thanks and we'll see. A few more are coming in tomorrow to do the same thing.

Yeah, that's my $730 million villa and you can have it.

<a href="http://www.fahad.com/pics/most_expensive_villa.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; I can't stand looking at the guy. Then, he opens his mouth and just makes everything even worse. He is like a hangnail. It just festers and bothers you all the time but seems to keep resurfacing. You know, damn well, he is the sole guy pushing this Miami trio story. Why? He wants a team worth covering to elevate his own national status.

He actually stated that Chris Bosh is a younger version of Nowitzki! What? Has he ever watched anything other than box scores for either of those two players? They have completely opposite games other than playing the same position. Plus, one is a winner who has led his team to multiple playoff appearances and one visit to the Finals. The other hasn't won since high school. Get a clue, pal.

I am all for pushing controversy. You just have to make some sense if you want to stand alone and push the button of normalcy. You also said you don't believe in team chemistry. I don't even know where to start. Unless you are talking about chess, chemistry is one of the most critical pieces you can have. Guys might not have to be best friends off the court but they have to respect each other and know how to play together. That is why Lebron will not end up with D-Wade. He doesn't want any question who is the sidekick or whose team it is. Sorry, Dan, he is not coming to Miami. It will be Cleveland or Chicago. You might get Bosh but should be wishing for Dirk. Maybe you would understand that if you ever watched them play in a game that wasn't the All Star or Team USA game.

NBA Free Agency 2010 Is Almost Finally Here

ALERT: Spoiler review below. I did try to keep my bias' aside and think about what are the best fits but some of that was bound to get thrown to the wayside.

The most talked about free agency period in sports is almost upon us. Will it live up to to all the hype and salary dumps some teams have made for a slim shot at a superstar? We know the so-called summit occurred this past weekend and this may likely shape the foreseeable future of the NBA. I find it interesting how quiet David Stern has been through all this. You know he has his hands in it somehow behind the scenes.

David Lee - a hustler and good player but, in the end, a stat-sheet filler on a horrible team with a great offensive scheme. He is a good player as your third option but not a cornerstone piece. Houston would be a good fit after they traded Carl Landry last year. New Jersey is another option, especially as they just cleared more cap space (look for Rudy Gay to end up there, also).

Dirk - ho hum. There is no way Cuban lets him leave town. He just wants the guaranteed extension, to see a little extra TLC, and be a part of the legendary 2010 NBA Free Agent Class. He stays and misses his chance to determine his destiny for a championship. The only other option would be the Nets, but it seems he prefers Jason Kidd over Devin Harris. That could be an option, though.

Carlos Boozer - wouldn't it be comedy to see Cleveland as an option for Boozer after the infamous handshake deal? Maybe Gilbert goes through all the motions and then rips up a contract at the last minute all on a webcam for Cleveland fans to have some form of pleasure this summer! I think he ends up in Miami with his buddy, D-Wade, as he wanted all along. Utah, you actually messed up for once and should have traded him last year.

Joe Johnson - he chased money before and has no problem leaving a team. Otherwise, why would he have left Phoenix for the Hawks? He reunites with D'Antoni, only to fill the box score, put seats in MSG, and get knocked out of the playoffs in the second round every year. That is the ceiling for that system without defense. Some players are OK with that, as long as the checks are coming in.

Amar'e Stoudemire - similar situation to Johnson. You have to think he is sick of being the center of all trade talk over the last two years. Sure, Phoenix just had a good run but what makes you think they can even match that next year? Nash and J-Rich are only going to decline. The financial situation there is an absolute mess. Why not bolt for the exact opposite and go to NYC to play for your old coach?

Chris Bosh - it sounds like he will pretty much follow Lebron, which is exactly what he should do if he wants to win. That means he looks at the Nets, Bulls, Heat, and Knicks. One thing that I am surprised has not come up is the potential of a pick and roll with D-Rose. Go back and watch clips of him running this with Brad Miller. Yes, Brad Miller. The slowest, most awkward player in the league. Just imagine what he could do with Chris Bosh. Chris, imagine someone other than Calderon feeding you the rock. Devin Harris and Mario Chalmers cannot run the pick and roll anywhere near as well as Rose. You play like a superstar but have been buried in the NBA Toronto market. Chicago elevates your brand awareness on and off the court.

D-Wade - done deal to stay in Miami, in my mind. He can continue throwing stones at why other cities aren't good but everyone knows that was just to convince free agents to join him. If nobody joins him, he could join forces with Boozer in New Jersey. It sounds like players have a lot of respect for the new 6'8" Russian owner.

A few side notes here. Are the Bulls really that disloyal to their players? Jordan wanted to be an owner so there was never any hope for life after his career with them. Pippen was brought back as a player-coach to end his career. Then, they have Paxson, BJ Armstrong, Stacey King, Kendall Gill, Bill Cartwright, Bill Wennington and even Pete Myers all have had post-NBA careers with the Bulls. How is that anything but loyalty Mr. D(bag)-Wade?

Also, what about your kids? You think your recent divorce would have you thinking about Chicago as an option to be closer to your children. The fact is you are saving face to avoid that media mess and know most real Bulls fans understand you are a horrible fit for this team and you are not wanted here. I know you can fly your kids to see you whenever you want but that isn't the same as living near them majority of the year. If Wade ever wins another championship we better not see him on the podium holding his kids (a la Kobe), or I will throw whatever is in my hands at the screen.

LBJ - much has been said and this could go on for infinity with different theories. I still think Cleveland is the front-runner. The incumbent always is. Anything else represents change. I like change but most people don't. It has been said, the only people who like change are babies with wet diapers. If I were Gilbert, I would meet Lebron at a Famous Dave's and walk in with an autographed photo of the "The Shot" by Ehlo. I would say, "you know we love you as a part of our family" and walk out. Keep it home and simple.

The Bulls should begin explain the young nucleus, building another dynasty, etc. Then, pull up
Be Like Mike" and show the recent list for Forbes Richest Athletes. Yes, the Chicago Bulls and Reinsdorf were part of building the $1B Jordan empire. That's not to take away from MJ, Nike, and the parties who mainly drove the success but not other organization has the experience of dealing with that. The Chicago Bulls know how to build a dynasty and develop a global icon. Imagine what they could do in today's global economy. Look at the Hawks. Two years ago 95% of the city couldn't tell you a player on that team and they certainly weren't mentioned on ESPN, ever. Now, they are all heroes.

Lebron, if you make the jump to Chicago, I will have to change my opinion and find a way to like you. I will also kick all my idiot friends for not agreeing to split season tickets. I couldn't do it alone because last time I did it led to the colossal, Ben Wallace flop season. My guess is it won't take long to get over past issues. After all, if you want a revolution the only solution, evolve, you gotta evolve. Let's change together. Make us all witnesses that championships are the most important thing to you, not winning 60 regular season games, dancing on the court, and early playoff exits.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; You don't have cases like the Yankees for a few reasons. There is the luxury tax, which does allow big market teams to throw their money to some extent. However, it is a pretty steep price matching the dollar. This keeps teams in check from getting too ridiculous. Imagine if MLB set a limit at $100M. A few teams would pay a bit over. The Yankees would have had to pay $300M, which probably means no World Series this year.

The main reason is that the NBA rewards teams (and GM's) for drafting successfully. That is why they can always give their own player the largest contract. The flip side of this is, of course, those teams who have some poor drafts. In many cases, the Bulls (largely thanks to Krause) fall into this category. Some were also just bad luck. Missing out on Yao Ming, poor draft class with Marcus Fizer, the motorcycle incident, Riley snagging Wade, etc.

Paxson understood that roughly 1/3 of draft picks are busts. He worked to get as many as possible by buying Loul Deng from the Suns, trading Curry for Tyrus and Noah, and dealing Thabo for Taj Gibson. People always seem to forget those were picks the Bulls would not have gotten if not for craftsmanship from the GM.

I actually felt Paxson did a good job with the hand he was dealt. A poker player would understand you must have patience. Sometime you gotta wait for a good hand and go all in. He tried that with Wallace and lost. 2010 is that next hand for the Bulls. Remember they almost had Tim Duncan, T-Mac, or Grant Hill. Certainly would have changed the team's path if we had the greatest power forward of all time, right?

Bengals Sign Johnson

It has been public knowledge for about 18 hours that the problematic, Larry Johnson, planned to sign with the Bengals. The hip injury to Cedric Benson escalated this. Here is my take.

The Bengals needed some veteran help as insurance. Bernard Scott seemed to fill in aptly but you never know long term what issues he might have blocking, fumbling, etc. That being said, Johnson was not the answer.

The Bengals have spent years (and plenty of PR dollars I am sure) to get the right players in this locker room improve their image. Getting the wrong guys out was the most important part of that. Guess what? Now, they are winning despite not making any dramatic new additions. Let's face it, Coles was a mediocre add, after losing TJ.

Now, after their biggest win in a long time, they decide to throw all that mindset to the wind and bring in one of the biggest problem players in the NFL!? Hey Marvin, I heard PacMan also needs a job. The Bengals would have been wise to bring in a player like Edge, Stecker, Rhodes. there are still decent options out there. Beside, LJ was averaging 2.7 YPC! Granted, his line is terrible but that production is hardly worth the headache. Just ask the poor Chiefs fans.

The Bengals are one of the feel-good stories of the year. I hope this is not the beginning of the end for them and their fans. Well, except for the few (most were very good) jerk fans who rubbed it in out faces when we made the trip for the Bears blowout.

This Week In Chicago Sports

Rick Morrissey is completely wrong on the subject of retiring Jordan's number. Ask the 83 International players in the NBA how his global icon status helped change their lives. No player has changed the game as much as No. 23 did. This is a nice change in maturity from Lebron.

Rookie, Brandon Jennings, drops 55! Wow, that is a great showing for an undersized point guard the scouts said couldn't shoot. Scott Skiles is at it again by helping a young team overachieve. He sure has a way to make it work for a few years.

Jay Cutler should be glad many NFL fans do not have the NFL Network. Thankfully, plenty of analysts took the time to share how poor his decision making was/is. He cannot take full blame as he has one of the worst offensive lines to ever take an NFL field protecting him.

The Bears simply have a ton of problems. No true #1 receiver. An again, overrated defense. The aforementioned line. They basically have Lance Briggs, special teams, and a QB with tons of physical talent. On top of that, no draft picks in sight. It is going to be awhile, and you have to wonder how long before Jay really starts crying publicly. Bring in Mike Shanahan. Move Lovie, at all costs.

Another hot seat is Weis. Most ND fans want him out. It sounds like he is done. I say ride another year and see how the recruits continue playing out. ND is just not the attraction it once was, and they may have a hard time finding a drastic improvement making the costs worthwhile.

The Blackhawks continue to play strong and are the only thing in the city carrying serious playoff hopes for the foreseeable future. I have concerns about goalkeeping in the playoffs but that remains to be seen. Should be a nice improvement when Hossa gets back. It is nice to see him working out with the team.

Marlon Byrd? Is that really priority #1, Jim Hendry? Did you not learn your lesson from bringing in the last aged, Texas outfielder? Granted, he does not have the attitude problems of Mr. Bradley, but come on! We are the Chicago Cubs. You can and have to do better than that.

Chicago Flag Football

Those who came last night to Field 6 of the Lincoln Park South fields, witnessed one of the most competitive 8 on 8, recreational, co-ed flag football games you could ever imagine. The Dutch Ovens came out flat. It almost seemed as if they were drinking beer and eating pizza right before the game. It was quickly 14-0 but they were determined to change the tides.

The calm, California-looking quarterback, Jason Robelia, marched the Dutchesses down the field. A leaping grab as the first half expired from Rick Kerley left the score 14-7. A few quick sips of water and all were back on the field. Sometimes ovens take awhile to preheat and this team was planning for a strong second half.

The Dutch Ovens marched again to tie the game with a corner pass to Tara Gibney. She seemed refreshed after her recent exit from rehab. Her new focus could make a big difference in this team's playoff push. More lock-down, man defense forced the opponent to punt, which was a terrible call considering they did not gain a single yard. This left the Dutch Ovens with a short field and they made the most of it. Kerley came down with his second TD of the game, and quickly claimed himself, "Unstoppable".

This would come down to the wire as a few lapses gave up another touchdown. However, TGIF decided to go for two and the win. Ryan Habich collided with two players in the endzone and the ball hit the ground. The players complained to the refs that he gassed them out. It is likely those two players will face steep fines. Dutch Ovens took the win 21-20. They walked off victors to a nice bottle of red wine. There are rumblings of a long extension to potential coach of the year, Shane Summers.

Tara Chinski also had a surprisingly strong showing. Her new, black hair must have given her super powers. Most suspect it is the upgraded last name, though. She recorded two tackles, broke up a potential touchdown pass with her face, and recorded her first reception of the year.

To those who have not seen this team play, it would be wise to take the time next Thursday. All could learn from the heart and sportsmanship the Dutch Ovens put on display week in and week out.

Daly Limo

Buyer Beware! Daly Limo does not understand what honoring a contract means. They called us at 11 am the day before our wedding and informed us the bus broke down. The first explanation was internal/under the hood. Upon further questioning, we were told it was interior. Lastly, it was something mechanical with the TV. Loose, dangerous, exposed wires when we said we didn't care about the TV. This was for a 20 person wedding party and all they offered was two cheap, stretch limos. I book standard limos all the time and gave them a shot because they had a good rate on the bus. Do not risk it because they overbook and do not hold their end up. I had to scramble to find a replacement, which cost me an extra $400 over the original $500 they were legally bound to. Needless to say, they have not offered a check or any concession for the mishap. I got a call the morning of our wedding and all they said was, "There is a note here to call you. I am not sure what we can do to help" Funny, because my contract said, "We don't promise. We deliver". I got none of that.

This was the only problem I had with our entire wedding. I highly recommend finding another reliable service.

NFL Mock Draft

This is the 3rd edition, but I only had time for one version of the NFL Mock Draft this year. The NFL draft is a thing of beauty. Every fan can talk about their new sense of hope come Monday morning.

1. Lions - Matt Stafford
2. Rams - Eugene Monroe
3. Chiefs - Aaron Curry
4. Seahawks - Mark Sanchez
5. Browns - Brian Orakpo - 17 teams sacks, really?
6. Bengals - Jason Smith - this mock draft gives the Bengals a perfect scenario
7. Raiders - DH Bey - that 40 time may be the biggest money maker ever
8. Jaguars - Michael Crabtree
9. Packers - Tyson Jackson
10. 49ers - Michael Oher
11. Bills - Andre Smith
12. Broncos - BJ Raji
13. Redskins - Aaron Maybin (Ayers may be the better pick)
14. Malcolm Jenkins - would be very surprised if this wasn't the pick. Will be good FS.
15. Texans - Clay Matthews - Say hi to Uncle Bruce. Won't lack in effort and has the pedigree.
16. Chargers - Ray Maualuga - toughest team to predict (3 USC linebackers all options here)
17. Jets - Josh Freeman (very possible Bucs trade up to Texans and take Freeman, making Maclin, Wells, or Moreno the choice)
18. Broncos - Robert Ayers
19. Bucs - Michael Johnson - also like Jerry
20. Lions - William Beatty - Britton may be better but suited for right side
21. Eagles - Knowshon Moreno
22. Vikings - Eben Britton - may look Unger as RT/C
23. Patriots - Brian Cushing
24. Falcons - Peria Jerry
25. Dolphins - Everette Brown - one thing is sure, Parcells will pick LB or CB (Butler, Davis)
26. Ravens - Jeremy Maclin
27. Ziggy Hood -
28. Bills - Brandon Pettigrew
29. Giants - Hakeem Nicks (RB-Brown if trade for Boldin)
30. Titans - Darius Butler
31. Cardinals - Beanie Wells
32. Steelers - Vontae Davis (if he doesn't fall, I think Alex Mack)

Boldin Might Not Play, Are Days as a Card Over?

Anquan Boldin is hurting and may miss the playoff game this weekend. The Cards shocked a lot of people by winning a playoff game after collapsing into the postseason.

Their defense is improved but still has some big holes. A playmaker on this side of the ball would make a big difference. Running back is the most obvious need. QB or O-line could even be a possibility. Warner is aging and it appears Leinart could care less about being an NFL quarterback. So, where could he end up?

Titans - a very good team in need of a #1 receiver. Gage is a good #2 but Boldin makes this team much better.

Eagles - They have a lot of decent receivers, mainly because of Westbrook and McNabb. McNabb is getting up there and probably has 1-2 season left of successful play. The torch was nearly passed this year. They have been looking for a playmaking receiver (without the attitude) since TO left.

49ers - SF fans would love him and would create additional excitement for this team that won 4 of their last 5 games. Who wouldn't want to play for Singletary?

Dolphins - Was Fasano their best target this year? Legitimate question and scary to think about. Ginn is developing and this would be escalated with a major threat lining up on the other side to draw double teams.

Ravens - Mason is getting near his end. Boldin would be an excellent option for Flacco. Scary to think if the offense had a playmaker coupled with that defense.

Giants - replacement for Burress? Slightly better player. Much better person.

Bucs - I cannot imagine Boldin being happy about leaving Arizona and Warner to Garcia, but they do need help at the position.

Bears - clearly a need. Same problem as above but would be a god send to Chicago.

Redskins and Cowboys - when aren't they in the discussion. They are like the Red Sox and Yankees of football.

Bulls Ready to Dump?

With the same record as they had through 34 games last season, is it time to dump players? I believe so. This was never thought to be a season of serious contention. A shot at a bottom playoff spot, at best. I think the Bulls are about a .500 team, barring injuries. They have had 3 starters out for serious time. Either way, there are too many players blocking each other on this team. So, who goes? Let's look at some options.

Nocioni - He has a big contract and is largely a role player. He is known for hustle but watch him on the offensive end. He stands in the corner outside the three point arc waiting. If he ran around, a la Rip Hamilton, and tried to get open his game would be much more effective. He is a typical Paxson player. He does a lot of things decently but none extremely well. Except complaining to the refs. Seriously, he argues EVERY call. Even the most blatant hacks.

Hughes - Hughes is pretty much everything wrong with the NBA. For some reason, I actually like his play. He is a ball hawk on steals and has some flexibility at the 1, 2, and 3 positions. Although, I do not like his play at the point. His main problems are being selfish, whining about playing time, and terrible shot selection. He is not exactly the player you want mentoring younger guards, especially Rose since his game and demeanor is a polar opposite. That being said, I would take him over Ben Wallace.

Hinrich - I think talk will heat up once he is back and plays for a few weeks. As with Nocioni above, Hinrich does a lot well but nothing great. He is too small to be the 2 next to Rose and makes to much to be your first guard off the bench.

Gooden - he is arguably the most valuable player on this team. They have been horrid while he was out, winning only one game. He is, sadly, the best post player and rebounder on the team.

Gordon - he would have to approve any move so hard to discuss. I would love to keep him as a 6th man, if he realized what he is worth due to his shortcomings.

Pretty much anyone not named Rose is touchable and this team. I still like Tyrus and he has seemed to respond to Vinny lately. He is moving around on both ends of the court. He has abandoned the ridiculous outside shot and slashing to the hoop. Most importantly, he is challenging shots without drawing too many fouls. His 8 blocks the other night (granted against a terrible Minnesota team) should tell you something.

Side Note: While typing this, Rose has successfully slashed to the hoop 3 straight times. He is going to be an amazing player. He will be one of the most un-guardable players in the league.

So, what are some trade options?

Nocioni to the Thunder for Wilcox. This gives them a team player they could use on a team of individuals, led by the overrated, ballhog Durant. The Bulls get a very good rebounder and some athletic, size to their frontcourt. Wilcox is an upcoming free agent, so the Bulls could decide to re-sign him or Gooden at the end of the year. Throw in your 2nd round pick, if need be.

Hinrich to the Clippers for Kaman. This is likely nowhere near enough. Maybe a draft pick could be enough. Otherwise, find out if they want to want another guard thrown in. You might have to swap Thabo for Skinner to complete the deal. I say it is worth it.

Gordon or Hinrich to the Bobcats along with Noah for Okafor. The Bobcats are not crazy about Okafor, but he is a big presence not used effectively. I would like to see Rose, Gordon, and Okafor all play together. I think they would complement each other in a team game very well.

A 3 way trade with the Clippers and Golden State. Could be small or a huge deal. Davis goes back to the Warriors. Maggette comes home to the Bulls and gives them a big guard. The Clippers get Hinrich as a point to play with Gordon. A bigger deal would include Deng, Gooden, Hughes, or Gordon and Kaman.

Getting more unlikely is going after Boozer. He will be a free agent and word is the Jazz will work to kee Millsap, not Boozer. I think they will look to move him and get something. However, his trade value is lower after being injured all year. Would Gooden, Thabo, and Noah be enough? Might get you in the room to talk about options. Maybe Boozer likes Chicago and stays. Maybe an extension is done with the deal. He would solve a lot of problems.

All somewhat unlikely, but I will be surprised if the Bulls don't start selling and building around Rose with a few other players they determine as core over the next few weeks. Hint: Tyrus and Thabo have looked good lately. This either ups their trade value or shows Paxson they are pieces of the future.

More Bulls Trade Options

This is admittedly a stretch and hope from a Bulls fan. However, there is some potential merit. The Mavericks are clearly not in a position to compete this year. Nor, does the future look any better. They traded that away last year in dumping Harris for Kidd. So, they should look to cash in before it is too late. The hesitation that has doomed many a GM.

The trade looks like Nowitzki for Hughes, Noah, Tyrus Thomas, and a future #1 pick. Hughes gives them a bigger guard combo and they become a bit more run and gun with Howard, Terry, and Kidd. They get two young talents (both former lottery picks) that could improve with new scenery, as well as a future draft pick. Hughes contract also expires in time for the free agency everyone is chasing. So, they can keep him and enter the sweepstakes, or use him as viable trade bait next year.

Not likely, but another option. It would give the Bulls immediate help as a top 4 team in the East. The Mavericks would not be much worse off but have a better hope for the future.

MLB Free Agency

MLB Free Agency period means it is time for the Yankees to get out their checkbooks. Another year, another attempt to buy a championship. They are off to the races overpaying for Sabathia and Burnett. $160 million will only allow Sabathia to get more overweight. He has a lot of treads on that arm and you have to figure will eventually have a season of pain. He has also pitched in small markets in Cleveland and Milwaukee. It will be interesting to see how he responds to NY media and criticism. My guess is some pains and struggles.

As for Burnett...AWFUL. What is the chance he pitches 15 games next year? I will give you the over but I am not offering anyone the under. There is a reason he opted out of a contract to get in a new one. Even he is afraid his arm will fall off. The history is there. Besides that, he really is not an elite pitcher. He is a sexy pick because he throws hard and gets a lot of strikeouts. However, his career stats are 87-76 and a 3.81 ERA. Solid numbers for the A.L. He just received almost $1 million per career win. He won't return that many in the next 5 years.

Teixeira is cashing in. The Orioles and the Nationals? If I were the Angels or any team interested in him, I would turn away. He clearly does not care about winning. He wants to go home and enjoy his green.

Why the talks of ManRam retiring? He just proved he can carry a team better than any individual in the game. It is funny how things change. I loved Manny in Cleveland. Hated him in Boston. Liked what he did in LA. Then, hated him for what he did to the Cubs. Now, I cannot wait to see where he goes and watch him swing the bat. I will take him over any hitter not named Pujols.

The Brewers made a good move signing Capuano to a minor league deal that could pan out for a small market. The Cubs adding Gathright was a decent move, but likely ends the Pie trial (who will he be traded for?). Moyer for two years seems like a stretch. Yes, he throws off-speed. Yes, he has adapted and changed his game. Yes, he had a very good year and is a big reason they are World champs. Did anyone think how he will be 48 when this contract ends? I like him, but give him a one year deal.

That is it for now. Watching the Bulls in OT.

Bulls Potential Trade

Kirk Hinrich needs to come back, so the Bulls can make some moves. It is no secret about their logjam at the guard position and the need for some frontline and post help. Reports have the Magic looking for a point guard. Would they be interested in Hinrich (and maybe a throw in) for Turkoglu and Brian Cook?

At first glance, this is not a great improvement for the Magic, but I think Howard, Lewis, and Hinrich would give them a well-rounded team. It would make Howard and Lewis more of the focus with a guard who plays defense and distributes first. As for the Bulls, they get a bigger player who can slash and complement with Rose. Hedo is versatile and can score. Cook makes the numbers work and gives you another serviceable big.

Not a likely trade with Hinrich shelved. However, one that could help two teams looking to improve their rosters.

Cubs Seeking Peavy

The word is that another Cubs Padres trade is looming around the trader. Hendry and Towers must have a secret love affair. Well, most of the trades have seemed to work in the Cubs favor, so let's do it again. Towers claimed Peavy's train has left town. That must mean a deal is close because he is too smart to destroy his trade value with a comment like that.

This comes after hearing Dempster, 32 years old, wants in the ballpark of $70 million over 5 years. Walk away from that. I would be ecstatic if they added Peavy to Zambrano, Lilly, and Harden. If you can get Dempster for more like $50 million for 4 years, that rounds up the best rotation in baseball. If not, let him walk. Put that money into a left-handed right fielder. That might be a better idea, either way.

Now, what should the Cubs give up? Marshall, Fuld or Pie, possibly Jake Fox, and some other prospects. Vitters or Colvin could work, too. In fact, Vitters could be the main prize and is not likely to have a spot with the Cubs for awhile with Ramirez at third. The Padres are looking for a double, not a homerun, in return. 4 prospects should do.

Some other moves I would like to see..Sign Marte as a lefty out of the bullpen. Trade Marquis and some prospects (maybe Fontentot) for Brian Roberts. A blockbuster would be sending Soriano to the Mets, the Mets and Cubs sending prospects to the Rockies, with the Cubs getting Holliday from the Rockies and Church from the Mets.

Bulls Upcoming Season

Yes, I am one of the few in Chicago who still loves the Bulls. At least, they have given me less heartache than the Cubs. This is a brief preview to the upcoming season. One problem the Bulls face is the East has gotten much better. The 76ers added Brand to a solid, young nucleus. The Raptors (who I felt should have been much better last year) solidified their front line with Jermaine O'Neal. Orlando should be even tougher. Even the Bucks may have improved...Some.

The Bulls still have the same problems as always. No low post scoring. I have scanned every player in the league and cannot find any viable player to fill that void that is worth trading for or taking on their contract. How many low post scorers are there, really? Name the ones worth double-teaming, and I bet you hardly need more than one hand.

Now, the second problem is the logjam of guards. Rose, Hinrich, Gordon, Hughes, and Sefalosha. Either Sefalosha has to play the 3 or one of them needs to be traded. Gordon cannot be traded until Jan 1. Hughes and Rose seem to work the best together, so far. The slasher mentality coupled with Deng on the wing appears to have some potential.

Here is my take on how things play out. Larry Hughes has a decent season. Good enough to make the Ben Wallace trade look lopsided, in favor of the Bulls. Drew Gooden continues his usual stats but still not a very smart player. He is a solid bench player. Rose proves to be the scorer and tough player the Bulls have sought for years. The Bulls are a guard team who ignores the post like the Bears focus on defense and ignore quarterback. Ok, probably not the best idea. Aaron Gray develops into a serviceable center. Some improved footwork and passing skills over the next year and we could have a Brad Miller type on our hands. I would take that.

So, who needs to go? There is the possibility of the Heat trade for Marion or Odom from the Lakers. Do either of those players improve the Bulls situation? No, not really except Marion does improve a shaky defense. The problem is where you play him. He is a tweener and we have plenty of those.

So, my guess is the Bulls finish somewhere around 6th in the East. Rose has ups and downs. Beasley puts up great numbers and everyone thinks this was a horrible move. Paxson does trade Gordon but maybe too late and not the right player available. The media cries for his head.

Goodbye Cedric Benson

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_DxIZZaZEgAw/SE2_i3WpGqI/AAAAAAAAABM/WER7ExbdNBs/s320/Benson_Arrested_Burn%5B1%5D.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5210030949632907938" />
The Bears have finally moved past the Cedric Benson era. After 2 DWI's, a few decent games, and a couple touchdowns (most of them stolen from Jones), he is finally gone from Chicago. Everyone can breathe a sigh of relief. It's hard to remember a waste of talent who ruined a locker room with such little on-field performance since the last Chicago bust of Enis.

It was not hard to see this coming. You could hear the Bears pondering it after the first boating incident. Well, Benson did not want to leave any room for interpretation so he decided to get drunk and hop in his car. Nice move. The drinking is certainly one thing. I figure the league will suspend him for at least 4 games in the fashion of Jared Allen. The worst part is the sheer stupidity. Imagine all the irony of this scene in Austin. Car loads of poor, college kids spending the last $6 in their pocket for the night to get home safely, passing by Benson falling over on the sidewalk with the $30 million he stole from the Bears. Couldn't he hire a driver, pay a friend to drive him or around, or just invite friends over to his mansion?

Good riddance. You have no talent. Even less brains. And now you have no job. I hope no one picks him up. I get so sick of Jerry Jones acting like he runs the Betty Ford Clinic. Let this waste just fall out of the league and start an organization with McNown, Enis, and Terrell.

The Bears still have three running backs on the depth chart. This frees up time for the more deserving Forte, AP, and Wolfe, which I think is actually a decent three-headed monster. I feel they do need a goal line back. Ron Dayne or Mike Anderson could both be decent fills and carry higher YPC averages than Benson, anyway. Of course, there will be talk of Alexander or Henry. Obviously, Henry will not be considered and Alexander needs a way better line than the Bears can offer. They could also trade the Raiders for Fargas, but I don't see that happening with all the comments about how much they love Forte.

On a positive note. Congratulations to Marcus Robinson who retired as a Bear today. He had some good seasons with the Bears and was fun to watch. I am glad he came home to the team that drafted him to retire.

Matt Ryan and Ridiculous Rookie Contracts

Matt Ryan just signed a deal to guarantee him $34.75 million. Great for him and his family. That is terrible for just about anyone else. He has yet to step on an NFL field or take a snap yet he gets more guaranteed money than Manning or Brady? How does a sport get so screwed up that rookies make more than proven stars? The NFL does a lot of things right, which is why they are the most popular sport. However, if recent trends continue that might start to fall.
Who gave these agents all the power? I realize some of this is safety net in case that player gets hurt. NFL teams should not be complaining because they make enough money as it is. BS. What is the worst case scenario, here? A rookie gets $5 million guaranteed, gets hurt, and never plays after two or three years. OK, guess what you still should be a 25 year old with a college degree and starting out with a couple million. How many college kids would complain about that setup?
When will a team step up and say, here is what your player is worth. Let him prove himself over the next three years and then we will pay him. If not, he can go fly a kite. Surely, that would tick off 95% of that teams' fan base for the next year as such player would likely just sit out and enter the draft the following year. The positive would be the precedent it would set. A GM needs to step up or else the player's union needs to get this corrected.
This is one area where the NBA has a huge leg up on the NFL. NBA players sign a three or four year deal, prove their talent on the court, and then get rewarded with huge contracts. NBA players do make a lot more on endorsements but even Lebron only had a couple million a year on his initial contract.
There are numerous problems but my biggest are the following, not in any particular order; 1) Veterans get ticked and hold out to get what they feel they deserve (See Chad Johnson, Urlacher, Jason Taylor, on and on). 2) Young men get a huge payday and do not know what to do with this, so they begin a Hollywood lifestyle (Leinart). 3) Players get de-motivated since they already have a huge payday and what is next? Passion for the game falls to the wayside and talent is wasted. 4) Player gets overwhelmed to live up to that contract and in turn alienates themselves from their teammates and much needed support 5) Teams get strapped to bad contracts when the young player fails expectations and the franchise cannot compete. They feel pressure for that player to perform because they have already invested so much into them.
The NFL has a lot going for it, so I hope the problem will get fixed. I would hate to see this continue escalating and causing further problems. Goodell faces some decisions early in his tenure. He certainly has spent a great deal of time and energy on the bad personalities. He should begin to focus on what some of those players are rewarded for, too.

NBA Playoffs

The playoffs have been entertaining so far to me. Many of the teams were so evenly matched, home court has obviously been a huge difference. Most games were very close until the third quarter, when the home team pulled away. To the box score viewer, the amount of 10+ point victories would seem as fairly boring so far. However, they have actually been very competitive. The Hawks even pushed a seven game series. I have enjoyed the competition but still find myself yelling at the TV about how much referees still control the game.
I really hoped to see the passing of the torch last night. Duncan to Paul much like Bird to Jordan as the future of the Conference. I guess that will have to wait. The Hornets will be a factor for the next 4-5 years with the nucleus of Paul, West, and Chandler. Another guard on that team not named MoPete or Pargo and lookout.
And then there were four. Spurs vs. Lakers will be a great match up. This could be the last main ride for the Spurs. That bench is getting old and either Tyson really is a great defender or the season is wearing on Duncan. We'll see since the Lakers do not have a great match up on him. I see this game going an epic 7 with the Lakers coming out on top. The Spurs have never repeated, Odom is playing out of his mind, and Kobe has that look in his eye. If Bynum were healthy, I think this would be over in 5. This could be a big addition to Kobe's legacy. He has yet to make the run with him as the main star.
Celtics vs. Pistons looks to be another great series. Most people will probably get bored and change the channel with the slow-paced, low scoring, grind it out, defensive games. I personally think that is what NBA Playoffs are all about. Both of these teams are built for the playoffs. The Celtics have home court. However, they are full of veterans not recently used to the extended playoff season (Garnett last in '03-'04, Pierce & Allen in '04'-'05) and have been pushed seven games both series. Their tanks have to be running on empty soon. It looks like Allen already is. KG is my favorite player since Jordan because of the passion he plays with. I would love to see them win this series. Unfortunately, I don't see that happening. If Billups is healthy, and he should be, then the Pistons are just too deep. Cassell was added to defend him for this series (clearly Rondo cannot because of his size), so it will be interesting to see how that plays out. I don't think he has made a shot in the last 5 games, so that tells you where I think that scenario is going. Rip vs. Allen. Well, Rip is lights out and Allen can't find the switch. Garnett/Perkins vs. Wallace/McDyess/Maxiell is a slight Celtics edge because of Garnett.
Remember, the Pistons were the first team to beat Boston at home. All the conspiracies want LA and Boston. I don't believe in that. These should both be physical, entertaining series. I look forward to the beginning tonight. Enjoy a burrito and bring on the Conference finals.

Early Season Baseball Comeback Players

While only a bit over a month into the season, here are a few guys having excellent comeback seasons. I love this award in baseball because so many guys come from years removed back to excellent play. Of course, this is real early for this award since many of these players could wind up hurt or resorting to familiar play.

1. Cliff Lee - After being outcast to AAA last year, Lee has found his control again. He carries an anemic 0.81 ERA, ridiculous 39:2 K:BB ratio, and a 6-0 record.

2. Troy Percival - He currently sports an ERA of 0.00 through 11 IP. He has a 10:1 K:BB ratio and has been responsible for turning a major league worst bullpen to the best. He has only pitched 65 innings in the last two years combined, so it is a good surprise to see his recent success. Many questioned the Rays bringing him in, but he has paid off so far.

3. Joe Crede - After playing in only 47 games last year and seemingly losing his job to Josh Fields, Crede has proven the naysayers wrong about his back. His average has dipped to .252 but who on the Sox is hitting? He does have 7 HR to go along with 23 RBI's. That goes along with still being one of, if not, the best defensive 3B in the game. Take note Kenny Williams.

4. Miguel Tejada - Tejada did have a decent season last year by most player's standards and may not qualify for many. Another thing against him, is the short hitter's park that is Minute Maid. That aside, he is hitting .331 with 5 HR's and 25 RBI's. Many thought his career was nearly over with the steroid and age issues. I have always liked Tejada because he plays hard and seems like a competitor who only wants to win.

5. Jorge Cantu - After a monster '05 season with 28 HR and 117 RBI's, many thought Cantu was primed for an excellent career. He has since disappointed many fantasy owners and practically fell of the face of baseball Earth. The former Ray may have resurrected his career with the Marlins. He is recently slumping and this may have just been an early fluke. Nonetheless, he has remade himself as a solid third baseman and is hitting .273 with 4 HR's and 12 RBI's. His big knock is the high strikeout count.

A few others: Joe Mauer (did play in 109 games last year but was not dominant after returning), JD Drew (16 RBI's), Duchscherer (back to dominant setup form), Rafael Furcal - (just realized he should be higher on this list but do not feel like re-arranging....hittting .366 5 HR's, 16 RBI's and 8 SB's.

Get excited as Rich Harden has been brought back. Soriano's spot in the lineup

2. Closer

Let me start by saying, I do not know 2% of what Piniella knows about baseball, but I have some doubts with the current setup. Where does Soriano bat in the order? He really has no best place to hit. I think Fukudome is a prototypical 2nd hitter. However, do you give up his high RISP average? Sorioano needs to grow up and realize he is not the best leadoff hitter for this team. Reed Johnson or Theriot are both much better fits. I prefer Johnson because I like Theriot down in the order and Johnson is more patient. My thought is that Soriano should hit sixth. Derosa can hit second because he is a good contact hitter. Soriano's power numbers would likely go up and his strikeouts would not be as damaging.

Another blown save by Wood. When does Marmol move in? He is definitely one of the best relievers in the game, maybe the best with Zumaya now a religious DL visitor. I realize I said Wood at the beginning of the season, so now I am contradicting myself. Wood is simply too wild to be a dominant closer. He constantly walks and beans leadoff batters.

If we are to have any chance to break the drought, some issues need to be fixed. We probably need to add one more good arm to the bullpen.

Final Mock Draft

1. Hamil, this is for you since you have been an active reader. (Also notice I have a link to your blog, inactive as it is). I have to give credit to the Sox for a strong start to their season. Their pitching has been excellent. A question I have is, how much do you regret not giving an extension to Crede? He is easily the best defensive player and probably best hitter on the team. That sounds like a cornerstone player to me. The back looks fine. Many 3B have had back issues for a season or two.

This is a position I give credit to the Sox franchise for over the last 10-15 years. They have had two of the best overall 3B I have honestly enjoyed watching in Ventura and Crede. While the NorthSiders fill the position with guys like Gaetti (until recently with Ramirez). So, the question is what happens to Fields? He did hit 23 homers last year. Is he a guy like Braun that can move to the outfield?

Another question is what happened to the best division in baseball? There is only one team over .500 and Kansas City is in second. I repeat, Kansas City is in second. I think the Indians will turn it around. You have to figure the Tigers will, but are they too old with too many holes?

NFL Mock Draft Version 2.0

1. However, as a season ticket holder, I need to get this off my chest.

Priority #1 - Obviously a coach. I think Carlisle or Westphal could be early favorites. A darkhorse I kind of like would be Terry Porter. He was a smart guard and did well in Milwaukee with little. Rivers, Scott, McMillan have all been good coaches and are similar mold.

Priority #2 - Clear the backcourt. Everyone assumes Gordon is gone. I think you start with Hinrich. If possible, move him and Gooden (maybe the pick, also) for Baron Davis. I think you would need to give BG the one year tender, re-sign Duhon, or find a true PG. You can still give Deng a decent contract and here is your core:

PG: Davis
SG: Hughes, Thabo...BG for one year?
SF: Deng
PF: Thomas, Nocioni
C: Noah

It does not look good as there are so many needs and every player on this team took a hit on their value. They still have talent and are a few moves from being respectable again. I still don't blame Paxson for missing Gasol, Kobe, or Garnett. The Bulls did not have the cap space to get Gasol, so it was not going to happen. Kobe was not coming without having something left on the team to contend with, and he Lakers were not making the trade without getting most of the Bulls team. The Bulls made the T-Wolves a better offer then they ended up getting, only to be denied.

NFL Draft Sleepers

Here are some guys I think will outperform their projected draft spot. Hopefully, there will be more than one this year.

1. Dolphins - Chris Long - Parcells likes the blood line and work ethic. QB (Flacco) with the 2nd round pick.
2. Rams - Vernon Gholston - absolute freak of an athlete and game changer. OT is a glaring need but will also available in 2nd round.
3. Atlanta - Jake Long - Long helps Turner and offense more than Ryan would. Dorsey is also good possibility.
4. Raiders - McFadden - A dream come true for Chuka!
5. Chiefs - Glenn Dorsey - OT is a glaring need, so Clady, Williams, or Otah are all possibilities but would be a stretch this high.
6. Jets - Mike Jenkins - "Mangenius" needs a CB in their division. McKelvin or DRC make sense. McFadden sliding would be the biggest gift they could hope for.
7. Patriots - Dominque Rodger-Cromartie - Unbelievable they get this pick. 2 of the top 3 DB's likely to go 6&7.
8. Ravens - Matt Ryan - DB also possible
9. Bengals - Sedrick Ellis
10. Saints - Keith Rivers - Rounds up one of the best LB cores in the NFL if Vilma and Morgan are healthy. The signing of Gay and recently Aaron Glenn rule out a DB.
11. Bills - Leodis McKelvin
12. Broncos - Ryan Clady -perfect fit and great value
13. Panthers - Chris Williams -Otah or Harvey
14. Bears - Jeff Otah - Would prefer Williams. Albert or Mendenhall also likely.
15. Lions - Rashard Mendenhall - AP and Mendenhall to frustrate and punish the Bears for years. No wonder Urlacher wants out.
16. Cardinals - Jonathan Stewart
17. Vikings - Derrick Harvey - bad news for Grossman
18. Texans - Branded Albert - past drafts have been smart and this would be, too
19. Eagles - Devin Thomas -trying desperately for a WR. Merling also possible
20. Bucs - Malcolm Kelly - Brohm might get Gruden's attention
21. Redskins - Phillip Merling
22. Cowboys - Limas Sweed - Felix Jones I'm sure gets Jones' attention
23. Steelers -Aqui Talib -OL a big need. Would love for Albert here and may trade up.
24. Titans - Desean Jackson -has to be WR for Young. Game changer like Hester.
25. Seahawks - Kenny Phillips -WR is a need but who is left? Trade up or down or a TE (Davis or Keller) more likely here. That's why this is version 1.0.
26. Jaguars - Quentin Groves
27. Chargers - Kentwan Balmer- may go pick before.
28. Cowboys - Felix Jones - Cason maybe if Jailbird Jones falls through.
29. 49ers - Mario Manningham
30. Packers - Antoine Cason - Phillips if he is here
31. Giants - Tracy Porter (4.29) - LB and Safety are bigger needs but he is better value.

Baseball Season - Busts and Breakouts

This is hoping to spark a conversation about who is due for a slump season or injury, and who will finally break into stardom. The 100 year celebration. Not many teams have the luxury of making that statement.

Why would the Cubs want to win the World Series this year? Isn't the whole aura about the team the history of never winning? Would their value go down in the market if they suddenly won and the lovable losers title was gone? How about the Cubs win the World Series AND the park is renamed Boeing Field. This took me a few minutes to write as I continued to vomit but some scary thoughts, nonetheless. As a Cubs fan, I have given up the hope of year to year and now only wish to see a Series title before I die. Not much to ask but how many have failed that same request?

Now for some positive reflection on this team. I think FUDummy is going to be a great addition. Stone recently said this guy will hit 85% of the pitches he swings at. If he brings that from the left side and the great arm shown so far, he will be just what the team needs. I think Rich Hill is prime for a great year. As much as I respect Buehrle, I feel he will have the best season for a lefty starter in Chicago this season. Soto has a good shot at ROY given the performance he carried into the bigs last year and the postseason.

Soriano, Lee, and Ramirez continue to make me nervous. I thought we were past Wood and Prior. Now we have three to worry about. CF and closer also are big reasons for concern. If we add Roberts, the offense is less of a concern and Pie developing is perfectly fine, especially with his defensive capabilities. As for closer, Wood, Howry, and Marmol are all very good setup men. None have proven to be solid closers. That is a way to ruin confidence and a career. Has everyone forgotten Latroy (BOO!) Hawkins. Closers can be fragile (Ask Billy Koch or Brad Lidge), and I do not want to see that happen to Marmol after enjoying his development so much last year. My call would be Wood because he has been through a lot already and bounced back.

Blackhawks

Is anyone else excited about the resurgence of the Hawks? We finally have a serviceable team that can be viewed from the luxury of your own home. TV was slow the other night and I was quite pleased watching Crawford get his first career victory. A shutout against the hottest team in the NHL, nonetheless.

There is a feel in the city that the Hawks have swung the shift of popularity from the Bulls. Of course, as a Bulls season ticket holder, this leaves me with a bitter taste. However, I used to be a huge Hawks fan as a kid and am glad to have them back. There has not been a product worth enjoying for quite some time. Savard has turned this team around. Now there is talk of Chicago in the running for an outdoor game next year. I hope that happens. It was one of my favorite sports events earlier this year. I can only imagine the success it would have for the franchise in a major market.

Bears Sign Booker -NFL Free Agency

Today, the Bears brought Marty Booker back. While this is clearly not a major splash move,(It has not even made the list on ESPN Free Agency moves at the end of the day) it is a solid upgrade for the team. Booker is a player very similar to Moose. The difference is that he comes at a fraction of the cost AND he has good hands. Moose catches roughly 51% of the passes targeted his way. Booker ups that to 61%. That is a nice difference, and I am sure the QB that gets the nod will be pleased. The Bears had way too many drops last year. This gives them the same knowledgeable presence of a veteran to help Bradley, Hester, and a likely rookie. However, I think Booker has better separation and again the hands. I am pleased with the move and hope Olivea is next.

With Favre retired, a few more moves in free agency for the Bears might allow the city to get excited about next season.

Bears Off-Season

It has been awhile but I feel like posting some recent thoughts. It is no secret that successful teams treat their lines as the core of the team and build out from there. These foundations must be strong for all other aspects to fully function. No quarterback can standout without a good line. However, a good line can make a decent quarterback better.

The Bears have regarded this theory in the past, but it was ignored last season. They thought they could get by with dinosaurs too slow to block anything coming in. I am glad to see them cut Brown and Miller and move on. Anything will be better. Re-signing Clark was actually a solid move because Olsen is not a blocking tight end. Clark leaving would have left this team with an aging Kreutz and not much else. Sidenote: does anyone know anything about this probable future Hall of Famer? I now do only because I asked myself that question last season when there was little to enjoy.

So we have Kreutz and Clark. Tait is likely to mirror Miller and Brown of last year. Garza stinks. He could be serviceable if surrounded with more talent, leaving him left exposed. I think Beekman might be decent. I haven't seen enough to know. He could be the next Columbo for the Bears. Metcalf may get it but not likely. This is a pretty bleak picture but no surprise to anyone.

Kwame Harris was one of my solutions, but I notice he signed (fairly reasonable for a former 1st rounder-3 yrs $14M) today with the Raiders. Shane Olivea would be a good fit. He has been a very solid right tackle the last few years for the Chargers. He fell out of favor last year and ended up getting benched before being released. He is only 26 and would certainly be a huge upgrade over Miller last year. Ryan Lilja would have been a really good option. Of course, the Colts realized that and re-signed him. Some other options are former Super Bowl starter, Tom Ashworth, or former Steelers starter, Chris Kemoeatu. Neither excite me all the much but would fill in as decent subs.

Olivea and another one of these options would give Rex or Orton a bit more time than last year and open up a few holes for a back. This would allow the Bears to go into the draft with a small amount of flexibility to take a lineman, back, or receiver. I think Mendenhall would actually be the best pick at their slot, unless they can trade down for the Cowboys two picks. If they don't take him, I hope they sign Julius Jones to a one or two year deal. He could rehash his career much like his brother did. That would be some ultimate turnaround if he sent Benson packing next year.

A True Rarity in Sports Today

Al Wilson played a role model for all professional athletes today. I hope more people take note. Enough about Don Imus. Let's focus on this positive story.

Al Wilson has been the heart and soul of not only the Denver Broncos defense but their whole team since he began his career with them in 1999. It is sad that the Broncos released him due to his neck injury caused by running into the notorius bum, Gerard Warren. This guy can still play and I look forward to seeing him move onto a team that can take him to the Super Bowl. Patriots? Bears?

The rarity is that Al himself called a casual press conference because he wanted to say thank you to the city of Denver and its' fans. What a breath of fresh air in this day with criminal records, whining about playing time and contracts, etc. The NFL should stand behind Al Wilson and work to make him a face for what is a current struggling PR case.

Lance Briggs, you could certainly take a page from the Al Wilson book of how to be a class act. He kept a smile and offered condolences that he wouldn't be able to talk to everyone and say goodbye. He says he was hurting so bad that he felt he couldn't go another play, but the fans kept him going.

I emplore you to check out these few minutes of what a real professional athlete should represent. http://cbs4denver.com/topstories/local_story_103115905.html

Mock Draft

Here is my first stab. Hardly any upsets and many Cinderellas are already home. Seeing Duke fall in the first round for the first time sine '96 is fantastic. Illinois outplayed and looked to be the only 12 seed to make it, only to collapse. You deserve to lose if you get outscored 12-0 in the final 4:30 minutes of any game. I don't care if you are up by 25 and all the reserves are in. McBride is a joke, and I cannot believe Weber spoke highly of his leadership. One of the leading three point shooters in Big Ten history misses all his free throws on a three point foul. What? OK, this was not meant to be a rant on U of I but has certainly turned into it. I hope there will be some upsets in the second round to spark something into this tourney. Oh, and it is St. Patrick's Day, which means it is time to crack a Guinness, make a carbomb, and throw on the leprechaun outfit. There is nothing better than sipping on a Black and Tan, knowing St. Patrick's Day is around the corner, watching March Madness. Ah, life is good. A toast to all the hard-working college basketball players fighting with every ounce of grit to become one of the lucky 65 teams. The rivalries and competitiveness of the sport are unrivaled by any other. Make your picks and watch the Cinderellas. Their slippers will come off and they will disappear before the night is over. I do hope the Bulls give it a good effort. Gasol certainly gives them the low post scorer they need. However, I do not think it is worth destroying the core of this team. Do not include Deng or Gordon. In fact, make a statement that these are the two core players you will build around. Make it your Jordan/Pippen combo of the future. Obviously, neither come close to the game of either MJ or Pip, but they both flash superstar capability.

There is a reason Hollinger just named Gordon as one of his two picks to the All Star squad. He has one of the true great jump shots in the league. This allows him to take his shot quickly, unaltered. That is why he seems so clutch late in the game. It is because the high arc stays the same when everyone is tired.

The trade to offer is PJ Brown, Noc, Duhon, and the Knicks pick. This is a very good offer for the Grizzlies. They would get a solid point guard in Duhon who helps run the court. He is an unselfish player and does all the small things. I have to think Jerry West likes his style. They get two expiring contracts in Brown and Noc. They can decide if they want to keep Nocioni or sign another free agent this summer. Of course, they get a chance for a top pick. It is still possible this could turn into a shot at the Durant/Oden sweepstakes.

The Bulls would be the best team in the East on paper. A starting five of Hinrich, Thabo (Gordon still better off bench player), Deng, Gasol, and Big Ben would have strengths in every category. Losing the grit and tough mindset of Nocioni would hurt. I love what he brings to the team and I know Skiles and Paxson feel the same way. The positives that Gasol bring completely outweigh that, though. Also, we cannot think about the "what if" on the draft pick. The team does not need to get any younger. In fact, if it turns into one of those two, who cares? How long before either of them is even as good as Gasol is now? Plus, remember it was a throw in for Curry.

If this is not the trade, then I hope the Bulls do not do it. The only other way I could see doing it is with the same players above but instead of Duhon, you give Tyrus in exchange for Hakim Warrick. I love Tyrus but getting Warrick and Gasol back is worth losing his potential. I am nervous every day until Feb 22nd that I will hear Gordon is heading to Memphis. Your choices have been good so far Pax, please keep it up.

Gross Travels

So I am pretty regular traveler. Some of the things I have seen and heard leave me hardly respecting the human race anymore. I also do not question things because I have just become used to many things. However, I felt the need to share a story about a recent encounter.

I was in the Detroit Metro Airport last Friday night. Not exactly the most hip place for a 25 year old but that is besides the point. I had a little over an hour so I sit down at the gate and start to read my book. I soon take notice why the seat was so available.

A young woman who I would say was in her mid to late twenties was in her own world. She had absolutely no care for those around her. Of course, she had her IPOD cranked up AND was yapping on her cell phone with one of her girlfriends. I hate when people do either loudly in public. She felt the need for both, simultaneously.

All of this is fairly common in today's world. Annoying, but not that huge of a deal. She apparently became bored with the music and friend combo so started fishing through her belongings for another option. Bingo! She decided to pull out nail clippers. Yes, she began clipping her fingernails right there in the airport. When that was completed, out came the file. After about 10 minutes of touching up, she calmly brushed all the trimmings on the ground.

I have certainly never been mistaken for a neat freak but do care about personal hygiene. This is not France. I have a hard time deciding where to do this in my own house let alone in an airport! I really wanted to say something but decided it was probably best to ignore her plus I was exhausted from two days of traveling. Please, keep your personal hygiene to a specialzed shop or your own bathroom.

76ers

This is a developing story in the NBA about a declining franchise. They have made some extremely poor signings in recent years, leaving them with heavy contracts and a severe lack of talent. See Willie Green and Steven Hunter as ways to steal money from the NBA. The team has won 9 games and currently sits tied for last place in the NBA.

They dumped Iverson for Miller (now on his 5th NBA Team) and two future first round picks. Getting the picks is a decent move but the Nuggets figure to be solid with Carmelo and AI so how good is questionable. Now they are supposed to be finalizing a buyout with Webber. This makes sense had they done it last year but his contract expires at the end of this year, so again a little puzzling.

Now, I finally see what Billie King is up to! It is reminiscent of some moves then-Cavaliers GM Jim Paxson made a few years ago. Remember him dumping Person, Andre Miller (funny how things come full circle), Nailon and others in the 2002 and 2003 seasons? It made sense as they were mailing in as many envelopes they could for the "Lebron Sweepstakes". Well, it appears the Sixers are doing the same thing for Greg Oden.

They are making every attempt to mail in the season and pray for the top pick. Don't believe me, go to the Sixers homepage. Yes, they have a gospel singer, Tonex, as the first thing you see. King and others really are saying their nightly prayers for the big man from Ohio State. They would have a solid team to build around him, Iguodala, and maybe even Korver. Although Korver makes too much money, his shot would be very helpful in developing Oden. This would give them an inside/outside combo and the new AI (Iguodala) to slash. They could keep Miller, who is signed through '09, to run the whole show.

This would make them a solid team in the East in a few years. It is the only hope for turning an abysmal future into a bright spot. Expect this team to make a couple more trades or dumps to rid themselves of a few more dollars. While a huge gamble, as it is a lottery, it is the only real move this once-storied franchise has. As a Bulls fan, I hope this plan does not work. Of course, we still hope the Knicks tank, we land Oden, and have one final laugh (and toast) to Isiah. Boy, Michael sure did ruin your head after the Dream Team debacle, didn't he?

Notre Dame

My entire life I have been a die hard Notre Dame fan. I know the Domers are much like the Yankees of college sports. Most people hate them or love them. I happen to be an Irish-Catholic who was born in Indiana so I never really had a choice. I remember my brother actually playing Knute Rockne in a grade school play and being extremely jealous. Well, except for all the songs he had to learn and sing, that is.

Notre Dame football sure has changed from what I grew up watching. I remember the exciting option teams with Rice and Rocket. There was always a dominant back from either Pinkett, Bettis, Watters, to Denson, etc. (who happens to be the career rushing yard record holder). This was always paired with a smash-you-in the mouth defense. This has been the most dramatic change. The Notre Dame defense of today is less than frightening to be kind. Certainly the college game has changed. Kids are bigger and faster. They want to go to attractive, fun, schools such as Miami, USC, Florida. Who really wants to head to South Bend to get an education? Notre Dame still has very high standards and while they make special circumstances (Julius Jones) they do limit themselves from some top athletes that have no chance of getting in.

The academic standards cannot be an excuse. Jim Tressel's Buckeyes had a team GPA of 2.93 in the fall with 61 players over 3.0. You can become dominant with smarter players not quite as athletically talented. In fact, that has always been the great Bob Knight's motto. He wants smarter players, not the most talented. It is pretty hard to argue with the winningest coach in college basketball history. This should be a benefit, not a roadblock.

It truly disheartens me to witness what this storied program has become. The players do not seem to have that look in their eyes and understand what it means when the smack the " Play Like A Champion Today" sign. Sure, they play hard but it is not the same level of putting intensity and true fear into their competitors eyes. Weis has done a great job of restoring the program to respectability. However, the next few years will be a true test and challenge of making them a dominant national champion threat.

My biggest disappointment was, of course, the Sugar Bowl game. This was not a game the Irish deserved to be in in the first place. Everyone knows they always get a better bowl game than they are qualified for because of their popularity and TV ratings that brings. That being said, they looked like the better team in the first half. They were running the ball and playing solid defense. They would have held the lead at half if it were not for the fake punt on their own 35.

This game was lost solely on coaching. The second half completely went away from the outside running attack that was killing LSU. Walker had 125 yards on 18 carries in the first half! That sure sounds like a formula for success to me. Why would you abandon this attack? (He finished the game with 128 yards on 22 carries). He had 4 carries in the second half and all were up the gut. Instead, they went to cross pass plays that were to receivers that were running poor executed routes and creating little to no separation. A few 3 and outs paired with the LSU offense marching down the field on long drives and the game was over. The defense was exhausted and the offense lost all rhythm and confidence. This game was 100% the fault of the coaches. No questions asked.

It is a shame Brady Quinn had to go out like that. Popular consensus is now that Russell is the better quarterback and will go No.1 to the Raiders. That will be a huge mistake. Quinn will be the better NFL QB. I don't care about his physical stature or one game where he was bombing the ball to wide open receivers like a game of Madden. While impressive, I do not even care that he can throw the ball 40 yards from his butt. I remember similar statistics from Kyle Boller when he came out. Or how about Ryan Leaf being drafted ahead of some guy named Manning because he had such an amazing Bowl game? They have career ratings of 71 and 50, respectively (or not so much). I know Weis helped develop one of the greatest quarterbacks of our time in Tom Brady. He feels Quinn has the same skill and drive to become great. I believe him and some team will be lucky when he falls.

I have high expectations for Weis and the Irish in the next few years. They will have some ups and downs, but they are at least a program that is pleasurable to watch again. They have had some of the top recruiting classes since Charlie came on so there should not be huge drop-offs. I hear they are recruiting loads of speed, which will be fun to watch. Little Claussen can, hopefully, continue the history of talented quarterbacks. I hope to be cheering for a national championship within the next 3 years. Please make it happen Notre Dame.

Cheer, cheer for Old Notre Dame
Wake up the echoes cheering her name,
Send the volley cheer on high,
Shake down the thunder from the sky,
What though the odds be great or small
Old Notre Dame will win over all,
While her loyal sons are marching
Onward to Victory.

Devin Hester

Obviously a bit of old news about the Pro Bowl special teamer but I felt like including him. The guy has an uncanny knack of seeing the field. He creates gaps with side steps and is deceptively strong. You constantly see guys getting a hand on him only to have him spin free. I think this is the reason he does so well because the other team assumes the play is over, then he is gone.

He is fast but there are certainly NFL players who can beat him in a foot race. He ran a 4.41 at the combines, which was just in the top 10 for his draft class. Again, it is how he sees the field and uses that speed that makes him special. It will be great to see him develop that vision as a corner, as well. If he can do that, he will be due a huge paycheck when the current 4 year, 2.86 million dollar deal expires. You have to figure he demands a raise even before then, though.

I love watching this guy and look forward to the many years in a Chicago Bears jersey. This historically weak position has finally been filled with a standout. Maybe now we can have the same luck at quarterback?

Below is a great video of some returns. This includes almost 5 minutes of special teams. Unbelievable amount of footage for a 24 year old rookie. The first Duke play may be the greatest special teams return ever.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=-F887UL7ksI

AI

I had so many problems with AI for years. There was the attitude he brought that he was above the NBA. Who could forget the Practice outbreak. Still one of my all time favorite videos. He seemed like a guy with all the talent in the world destined to never win a championship.

They had the run in 2001. The team was one of the most untalented finals groups in recent memory. However, they had the heart of little AI. This was when he showed me the type of player he really was and ended all prior conceived notions. He is only 6'0", 180 lbs and both seem a stretch. His body gets banged as much as anybody in the league as he drives the lane night in and out. Does anyone realize he averages almost 4 boards a game in his career? That is very impressive for a six footer, especially when someone like Eddy Curry wastes almost 300 pounds to the tune of 5 boards a night.

His drive is practically unmatched in the NBA and pro sports as a whole, for that matter. KG is one of the few guys who seems to want to win as bad as him. That being said, I hope the two of them get to finish their careers together. They have had similar paths, both winning MVP's and getting close to the next level. AI has obviously been closer by reaching the Finals. They would pair up well together as KG excels with a bonafide scorer. Remember what he did with Spree and Cassell? I do not think the Wolves have the best offering but this would be a good gesture from King and the 76ers. I imagine the Sixers will be cautious to avoid a Barkley for Hornacek, Lang, and Perry debacle.

Here are a few other good potential suitors;

Bobcats
They could offer Gerald Wallace, Brevin Knight, and a first round draft pick. This immediately gives the Bobcats and Jordan a fan favorite to fill seats and give the young guys a veteran presence. The 76ers get one expiring contract, another with 2 years, and a solid draft pick.

Kings
Swap Bibby, Corliss Williamson (expiring contract) or Kenny Thomas (best years as a Sixer), and a draft pick. Does not really help either side that much other than sending Iverson to a new division so he doesn't rack up 50 on them as regularly.

Pacers
Jasikevicius, Daniels, and Foster, with a draft pick. AI would work well with O'Neal. AI is no Artest and could bring a swagger the team needs. 76ers get some athleticism, size, and flexibilty.

Celtics
Szczerbiak, Delonte West and either potential phenom Gerald Green or Al Jefferson. It is worth parting with one, if not both, of these potentials for a sure thing. Ratliff is also a possibility except he is much less attractive than Wally. Paul Pierce and AI become serious contenders in the East now, rather than a few years.

Bulls
This has not come up very much. It is not surprising given the no headband problems with Skiles and Paxson. Just imagine the potential pitfalls with AI. However, the team needs a serious scoring threat every night so it is somewhat puzzling how little it has been mentioned. Gordon is great when he is on. Other nights he can't hit Rosie O'Donnell's behind with a sawed off. The swap could be Gordon, PJ Brown, and preferably Malik Allen, maybe Mike Sweetney. Sweets has played very well lately and gives the only low post scoring option. The 76ers get some expiring contracts and a new scoring threat. A draft pick would have to be included, but must be protected to not be the potential spot for Greg Oden. Come on Knicks. You can screw this up even worse.

Comcast

I have been experiencing problems with my Internet access at home for the past month or so. Finally, I called last week and had two technicians come out. They ran through a bunch of tests and said everything looks good. In fact, they told me we had excellent connection and very high speed.

OK, maybe I am just imagining things. They fiddled with a few connections and said any prior problems should be gone. This was on Monday and come Thursday the Internet was completely out. I noticed this after hours so I called first thing Friday morning. The automated system says I am caller number 34. I am beginning to get agitated but still put them on speaker and continue getting ready for work. I shower and finish all my morning routine to hear I am now caller 12. I decide to play with the dog until they are ready for me. About 10 minutes later the voice finally says, "you are the next caller in line and our next representative will speak with you".

The anticipation was now at a peak and I am ready to get this taken care of. I hear a voice on the line and assume it is the next representative. Much to my surprise, it is a new automated voice saying, " we are sorry none of our representatives were able to take your call. Thank you. Goodbye".

What!? Are you kidding me that I just wasted the better part of an hour and my cell minutes to boot? I will call back and see if anything has changed. Not so lucky, except that I am only caller 24. Forget it. I decide to call later. I tried numerous times throughout the day and never was able to get through.

Finally, Saturday morning I get a rep on the line. Luckily, this person was friendly enough to take care of the problem and extend a major apology for the previous problems. He decides to send a technician out on Sunday and thinks it is a bad modem (which I am renting from them to avoid hassles like this).

Sunday evening the tech comes out and after a few tests discovers it is actually a bad connection. The connector was put on my an amateur and has metal touching metal along with loose wiring. Thank you Comcast for sending out the cheapest help you could find and making sure work is done properly for a long, loyal customer.

I know this has been long winded and complaining. I sincerely hope another legitimate option will come in the Chicago area. I am tired of the monopoly Comcast has, which leaves little room for healthy competition. Hopefully, Comcast will get their act together (which I highly doubt), or RCN can step up their game and become accessible in all areas.

Ben Wallace

I have been a bit frustrated from all the media exposing this minor issue surrounding the Bulls recently. Sure, Ben was having problems as the team struggled. This is understandable as he has never been a part of the centerpiece of an organization. With the Pistons, the blame fell on Rip for missing shots, Chauncey for turning the ball over, Larry Brown, Flip, or even Turtle in the stands for throwing a cup on the Palace floor. The fact is a game was never put on his shoulders. Now he has the big contract and the expectations to be a leader for this team.

Somebody should have first told him of the headband rule before he signed. Even now, they should reverse it. This is something that actually helps his game mentally and physically keeps sweat out of his eyes. This city is used to reckless rebounding forwards/centers. This does not even touch the surface of Rodman. His end certainly justified the means, didn't they? Why not give Ben a little breathing room?

They should have also told him (and the media) to expect a slow start this season. The team compiles 8 new players on a team that has started slow since the Dynasty era. Couple that with a Western road trip. Let me pause here, as maybe I am one of the 5% of people who have actually followed the Bulls since the era. The Bulls have gone 4-41 on the Western trip in the last seven seasons. Does anyone remember that they were once on a 37 game losing streak for the annual trip? Also, they were playing quality West teams in the Spurs, Dallas, Houston, Lakers, and Nuggets. This was one of the toughest road trips any team will face this season.

Certainly, the play did have cause for concern. The usually reliable contributors were playing sloppy, missing plays, and horrid defense. Now, they have returned home and currently ride a 5 game winning streak. The team is starting to gel on both sides of the ball. This team is coming together much faster than in the past. I know Ben's numbers have not been great. For instance, look at his stat line from the Celtics game last night. He had seven points, 4 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 1 steal in 18 minutes. Not very impressive for a $60 million man. However, the best part of Big Ben's (and by the way, he is the real Big Ben, not this sophomore slump from the MAC in Pittsburgh) game is what does not show up in the lines. His energy, hustle for loose balls, tips that lead to another rebound or steal for a teammate, defensive intimidation, boxing out, picks, and other unheralded efforts are what makes this veteran so valuable.

Also, say what you want about his value in the locker room. It has been questioned lately, but there are a lot of smiles that come with this winning streak. The team is playing as a whole much better this early in the year as I can remember since the Dynasty. Could Wallace be a major contributor to that unity? I think so and am excited for the rest of this season.
